Wadephul Advocates for Better Detention Conditions for Maja T.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is advocating for improved detention conditions for Maja T., a non-binary individual currently held in Hungary, who wishes to be transferred back to Germany. T. has been on a hunger strike for several weeks.

In the case of Maja T., who is incarcerated in Hungary, Minister Wadephul has announced new discussions with the government in Budapest. "We will once again present our case in Hungary next week," said the CDU politician to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.

Initially, the goal is to achieve better detention conditions. "We are intensifying our efforts," emphasized Wadephul. However, Hungary has so far reaffirmed its interest in pursuing its own legal proceedings.

T. faces serious allegations, the minister noted. "Even in Germany, Maja T. would have to expect legal proceedings," he added.

Four Weeks into Hunger Strike

T. was arrested in Berlin in December 2023. The Hungarian authorities alleged that Maja T. had attacked members of the far-right scene in Budapest in February 2023, along with other antifascist activists.

In June 2024, T. was extradited to Hungary despite an ongoing expedited procedure at the Federal Constitutional Court, which had issued an interim order immediately after the extradition, prohibiting it.

Through the hunger strike, T. aims to secure better detention conditions and a transfer back to Germany. According to a solidarity committee and T.'s father, T. has already lost 14 kilograms during the four weeks of the hunger strike.

The German government has expressed concern over T.'s health condition. "The worry is certainly significant," said a spokesperson for the Foreign Office in Berlin. The government is maintaining close contact with T.'s family, and the German embassy in Budapest has managed to speak with T. The conversation took place in a hospital where T. is currently located.
